As you are already aware, motivation to lose weight is just one component of a successful campaign to lose weight.

The other three components are equally important and all fall under the banner of Mindset and are discussed further in my book.

But today I want to talk about exercise because I  know there are some people who are still struggling to get their groove on where this is concerned.

For me exercise is about so much more than just losing weight. I now crave exercise, like I used to crave a jelly donut. And here’s why …

Exercise, Endorphins & Morphine

I have a ‘set’ time to exercise so that I don’t actually have to ‘think’ about doing it. Like the commercial says, I “Just Do It!” There’s no to’ing and fro’ing in my mind. I know that as soon as 5:00pm rolls around it’s time to stop typing and get moving!

I feel SO GOOD when I exercise.

And this is what I really want you to get from this post today.

If you’re currently in a state where you feel depressed and simply don’t want to move, I urge you to get yourself to a place where you “Just Do It!” Don’t think about it, or rationalize it. I want you to just go through the motions, one day at a time.

And it’s OK if you don’t enjoy it in the beginning. Believe me when I say this, you’re not alone.

But when it becomes part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth it starts to become more enjoyable and you’ll find yourself looking forward to it.

The real bonus of exercise that not a lot of people focus on is the ‘high’ you get from it.

The Runner’s High

Have you ever heard people talk about ‘runners high?’ It’s real, I can vouch for it. It’s the euphoric state you get into when you’ve pushed yourself to a point where your body releases endorphins which trigger pleasurable feelings. Much the same as a shot of morphine.

You FEEL good when you exercise. You start to have a more positive outlook on life. To me weight loss is secondary. It’s going to happen whether you like it or not.

For me, getting that ‘high,’ that ‘rush,’ … that’s why I love to exercise. You can’t beat it.

And this is why I encourage you to find an exercise you love to do. Don’t worry about how many calories you’re burning … none of that matters. Because if we can get you to a place where YOU FEEL GOOD about yourself, you’re going to want to eat right and you’re going to want to look after yourself better.

And again we come back to mindset.

This entire journey is about adopting a mindset that is all about getting YOU to LOVE YOU! When you truly love yourself, you want to do good things for yourself.

So if you’re still seeing exercise as a chore that ‘has to be done,’ I think you need to get another exercise. If you’re not going to enjoy it, you’re not going to do it. And if you’re not going to do it, you’re not going to get any of the results you’re looking for. Remember, losing weight is just a side benefit of exercising.

Exercises to get your groove on

So when choosing your exercise, make it something that you LOVE to do … go for a bike ride, hit the dance floor, get out in the garden, hit the yard, tootle on around the golf course, get some vigorous house work done, grab a friend and hit some balls on the tennis court, go for a swim or simply take a walk … your options are endless. Make it something you’re going to look forward to doing.

And I need you to really ‘get this.’ Whilst you’re occupied doing a physical activity, you’re releasing endorphins, you’re feeling good about yourself and you are not thinking about food. That’s where we want to get you to.

Not only that, you’re reducing your stress levels, keeping depression at bay, boosting your self-esteem and you’re going to be sleeping better.

Not a bad payoff is it??

In Conclusion

When you find an exercise that you look forward to doing, it makes keeping your motivation to lose weight so much easier. And as long as your motivation to lose weight is rock solid, you my friend are golden!

I came across this story today and wanted to share it with you.

Apart from saving his life, Keith’s motivation to lose weight is so that he can take his dog for a walk … “wherever she wanted to go.”

So maybe finding your motivation to lose weight isn’t as elusive as you think. Maybe it’s about being able to enjoy everyday activities that many take for granted … like being fit enough to walk the dog.

Keith Martin – The World’s Fattest Man

The world’s fattest man has started dieting after doctors told him he wouldn’t live to turn 50 unless he did something to lose weight from his massive 368kg.

Keith Martin, 42, hasn’t left his house for 10 years and his girth, at 1.8m, is more than his height, 1.75m.

Mr Martin told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper that finding out he was the fattest man on Earth was the catalyst for him attempting to lose weight.

But he has a long way to go to change his diet and his size.

When Mr Martin was at his worst he was eating up to 20,000 calories a day, comprising an array of fat and sugar-laden foods and treats.

The food included a packet of bacon, six sausages, six eggs and toast and beans for breakfast, the Daily Mail reported.

Lunch was all that and more and then there was the pizzas, kebabs and curries for dinner.

And the eating didn’t stop there. It included chocolate, biscuits, fizzy drinks and coffee with lots of sugar.

Now, Mr Martin is trying to restrict himself to 1500 calories a day – and says he’s lost 10cm.

“Finding out that I’m the fattest man in the world has been the wake-up call I needed. I don’t blame anyone other than myself for this horrible situation,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Doctors have told me I won’t reach 50 unless I do something drastic. I need to lose half my weight before they’ll give me a gastric band. I’d love to be as slim as I was in my youth, but what I really want is simply to sit comfortably in a normal-sized chair. I am determined to get this weight off.”

Mr Martin last left his house on September 11, 2001.

He said his life changed after his mother died and he started eating big amounts every time he was upset. Before he knew it his eating and his weight were out of control.

“I didn’t think there was anything I could do. My self esteem was so low – it always has been that I just didn’t care about myself,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I just want to be happy, without needing food to make me happy. I want to be able to take my border collie Cheyanne for a walk – I’d take her wherever she wanted to go.”

How To Get Motivated To Lose Weight

how to get motivated to lose weightHow to get motivated to lose weight seems to be one of the biggest stumbling blocks to actually losing weight. Wouldn’t you agree?

We instinctively know HOW to lose weight. It’s simple right?

Eat Fewer Calories + Burn Excess Stored Fat = Happy Slim You : )

So simple right???? Nooooooooo … I’m sad to say it’s not.

The actual execution of the formula is basic on paper … but it’s hell out in the real world isn’t it? And is the problem out in the real world, or is the problem just between our two ears???

For me, the problem was right between my ears. I couldn’t for the life of me work out HOW to get motivated to lose weight, STAY motivated to lose weight and most importantly BE motivated to lose weight.

That was UNTIL I decided to do it for someone else … and that someone else was YOU.

You see, if you’ve been following my story you know that I’ve been dieting for 33 years.

It started when I was a chubby little 10-year old and I was told that I could lose all my fat if I drank a bottle of Apple shampoo. That was my first introduction to ‘magic pills, potions, lotions and pixie dust’ that heralded my foray into 33 years of dieting merry-go-rounds, yo-yo’s and abject misery!

Connecting The Dots

I was listening to Steve Jobs Commencement speech that he gave at Stanford University and he talks about ‘connecting the dots.’

He’s referring to the fact that as you go through life you’re not quite sure how all the dots are connected looking forward, but looking backwards later in life, you see how it’s all mapped out. All the little twists and turns of life, lead you to where you are today. Even the bad twists are an important dot in your life.

As I look back now I realize that all my sad little dots, lead me to here … blogging my little heart out in the hope that I might positively affect the life of just one person.

You see, I  know I’m not alone in this bewildered state of trying to work out how to get motivated to lose weight. If I were alone, we wouldn’t have a multi-billion dollar diet industry making a fortune in profits trying to help us. And just out of curiosity, if they are so effective in their methods, why are we still battling to lose weight?

For me, I tried every diet you can imagine. If you missed the list here’s just a sample. These are my dots … and they all lead me to here.

My Breakthrough

My breakthrough came when friends I trusted tried to lure me into a revolutionary weight loss program. My little heart went ‘pitter patter’ as I once again felt that unbridled yearning to be slim, that here was finally the solution I had been looking for … finally I WOULD BE SLIM. And all I had to do was drink two shakes a day!

And then like Poseidon reigning in his horses I came to a grinding halt! My conscience was yanking me back saying, “WHAAAT??? You’re going to go through all of that again???”

I became enraged that day. Enraged that I was still battling this curse, enraged that I had let myself go so badly, enraged that I wasn’t strong enough to follow through and finally lose all the weight I wanted so I could be who I always wanted to be, enraged that up until this moment I still had not worked out how to get motivated to lose weight all by myself.

My Turning Point

And that dot in my life, lead me to making this statement. I determined that I would find a way to lose weight that did not involve dieting, that would pinpoint exactly why diet’s don’t work and had always failed me and to work out a way that did.

That was how I finally got motivated to lose weight … I didn’t do it for myself this time. I did it for YOU.

If I was just doing it for myself, I probably would have quit, again …

They say you will do more for those you love than you will ever do for yourself. So I started this journey, motivated by the lessons I could share with you and along the way. I was determined to nail this … and on Day 66 I had an epiphany and I wrote this:

When you’re dieting, that tends to be where 100% of your focus goes, right? I believe this is part of the problem. We’re focusing on sticking to something and for some of us, this is not bringing us the results we want. If we have too much time on our hands, our minds tend to wander to our ‘program.’ And from my personal experience, when I’ve been on a diet and I’ve had too much free time, sometimes I’ve driven myself nuts with a tug of war of wanting to stick to my diet and wanting to break my diet. So here’s the thing. Do you think if we were all motivated by something apart from dieting, but had healthy eating and exercise as a PART of our lives, instead of it being the WHOLE of our lives, that we might be more successful at adopting a new lifestyle? And what if that ‘something’ was about making life better for everyone in your family and not just you? Do you think you would be motivated to make a change in your life if you knew it meant you could lose weight and make a difference in the lives of those you love?

Could this in turn be the motivation to lose weight you’ve been looking for?

So this is what I want to throw out to you today. When you’re trying to work out how to get motivated to lose weight, look around you and ask yourself, who or what in my life am I prepared to do this for? My kids? My partner? My health? My career? My family? My community?

Sometimes, we will do more for those we love than we will ever do for ourselves.

It’s not easy is it … this whole motivation to lose weight thing?

One day you think you’ve got it and the next day it’s waning.

motivation to lose weightWhy is it that the thing we think we want the most is so darned elusive? Intelligently we know that if we want to lose weight all we have to do is burn more calories than we consume and all will be hunkey-dorey.

But it’s not that simple is it? And why is that?

Why is something as simple as that little equation, a cause for so much drama and despair?

Well, if it really were that simple, we’d all be slim wouldn’t we? We wouldn’t need the multi-billion dollar diet industry, we wouldn’t need soul searching weight loss forums and we wouldn’t need people like me to ponder this question aloud.

So we come back a full circle and wonder aloud again, how do we find our motivation to lose weight? Where is it?

I think the better question to ask is actually, “why don’t you have your motivation to lose weight?”

If we all know it’s a simple equation of burn more calories than you consume … so what’s the real problem?

And here’s the answer …

It’s all about your mindset. What’s really ticking away in your brain when you think about losing weight?

~ Oh it’s too hard

~ I don’t have enough will power

~ I love junk food too much

~ I don’t like to exercise

~ I’m too lazy …

If any of these answers fit you, then I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don’t think you really want to lose weight. If you did, these thoughts wouldn’t come to mind.

If you seriously want to lose weight, I am convinced that the only thing standing between you and your goal is mindset.

If we can change the way you think about losing weight, and give you a solid working blueprint to successfully lose weight, I know you can do it.

Motivation To Lose Weight | But Life Gets In The Way | 6 Ways To Stay On Track

Guess what … life is ALWAYS going to get in the way. It can’t be avoided, so let’s find ways to work around it.

motivation to lose weightI’m not going to lie to you. Your first week is going to be the biggest adjustment of all. You’re going to be looking at new foods, throwing away old favorites, exercising, and training your brain to work with you instead of against you. There’s going to be a lot going on.

But do you want to know what the good news is? As long as you have a strong motivation to lose weight and stick to it for the first week, it just gets easier from then on. So take baby steps and commit to getting through the first 7 days.

My strongest recommendation is that you take it one day at a time. Know your limitations. If you’re not ready for temptations, try not to put yourself out there. Give yourself the gift of 7 days. That’s not too much to ask is it?

And then after 7 days, you can start to get your feet wet in the real world again; work parties, social engagements, anything involving food and alcohol, but remember to keep your motivation to lose weight with you at all times.

This is what I just told a friend of mine who’s about to start the program.

“Life will always be a temptation … it’s how we deal with it that makes all the difference. The first week or so will be the biggest adjustment … so if you can just make it through the first week and see some immediate results, you’ll be stronger and more committed to your goals when you do go out. For me, giving up alcohol was the hardest. I LOVE to drink! But after one week of not drinking, I felt OK. And then when I noticed that my pants were getting looser I thought, ‘well, it’s all worth it!’ I was saving money and I was saving calories and I was loosing weight! Which is something that had eluded me forever because I was not prepared to stop drinking! Having completed my 90 days I am not ‘hanging out’ for a drink and save my drinks for the weekend. But SUN-THUR I just don’t touch it. My achievements are too important to throw away. And as soon as you’re comfortable with it, you’re friends will be too and they will respect you for your decisions. And if they don’t, well you know how I feel about that. And trust me on this … nothing tastes as good as how you’ll feel when you get into the best shape of your life. There’s nothing worth eating or drinking that can compare to how good, ‘looking good’ feels! I promise you that!”

You have to decide for yourself what’s more important. Having a great time with the girls and sabotaging your dreams, or having a great time with the girls and being true to your dreams. You can have it all … giving up poor food choices and alcohol is not a bad thing for you or your body. It’s actually one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

You don’t need crappy food and alcohol to have a great time!

Here’s a small list of things you can do to support the “new you” in social settings:

1) Out to dinner

If you’re going out to dinner, eat something mildly filling before you go out so you don’t feel like raiding the bread basket as soon as it lands on the table. I have a small bowl of Lentil Soup but you can have a Protein Shake, maybe a banana … just something that will get your mind off your tummy when you’re out. Because let’s face it, if you’re not hungry you’re not going to indulge.

2) How to order from the menu

When ordering from the menu, look for what you enjoy and then work out which is going to be the healthiest option for you.  Quite often you’ll be able to have sauces on the side which is where a lot of your hidden calories are lurking. You know what to stay away from. And you also know that you have a lot to choose from. I try to only order a main course. Dessert is definitely off my menu. I would recommend if you are a fan of dessert and can’t say no, look for fruits. Anything with sugar is going to send you down a slippery slope.

3) What to do at a party

At a party or when out at a bar, drink soda with lime wedges and have it served in a cocktail glass. It looks like a cocktail and with a bit of imagination it can even taste like a cocktail. I call it my ‘Imaginary Mojito.’ The great thing about this drink is that you can say it’s a Vodka Lime & Soda and no-one will question you.

4) Don’t forget to brush your teeth!

Brush your teeth before you go out. I don’t know why but this always makes me feel like not eating.

5) How do you handle a tray of canapes? You don’t!

If you’re at a work event and a tray of canapes is being offered around, don’t even look at it. It’s not worth it. You know there’s going to be goodies on there … just look elsewhere. And be prepared. Maybe you can pack some nuts, dried fruits or crudites so if you really are peckish you have something to nibble on. Not in front of the others though as that would look weird. Sorry : )

6) Get your chatter on!

Become a great conversationalist! You’d be surprised what an effective tactic this is. Engage others in great discussions, ask them a million questions about themselves, talk a little about you and at the end of the night everyone will walk away saying, “What an interesting person she was!” When in actual fact, they did all the talking. Everyone loves a great listener. The pay off for you is that you are mentally engaged in something other than food and alcohol. You’re distracted and at the end of the night you’re as proud as punch that you stuck to your guns, your goals and your future glamorous self!

  • You want to lose weight so that you can look good in a new car you want to reward yourself with
  • You want to lose weight so that you can look amazing on the beach
  • You want to lose weight so that you can attract love into your life
  • You want to lose weight in order to get the courage to go after your passions
  • You want to lose weight in order to go for a job or a career you have your heart set on
  • You want to lose weight so you can enjoy traveling to an exotic location
  • You want to lose weight so that you can just look drop dead gorgeous!

Fijian Spinach Fiesta – One Of The Best Spinach Recipes Ever!

Spinach is packed with calcium, vitamins A and C, fiber, folic acid, magnesium, flavonoids and lutein and is known to assist in strengthening bones, and can aid in the control of certain cancers, specifically colon, lung and breast cancer.

The folate found in spinach is known to lower a protein that damages arteries and can also protect against heart disease.

And there’s one other thing … but I just forgot what it was … oh, that’s right … the flavonoids help protect against memory loss as we age.

And there’s one more reason why we should eat spinach … because it just tastes so darned good!

So here’s one of the best spinach recipes ever!

It has been passed down to me from my BFF Lisa’s mother’s friend who happens to be from Fiji! And we all know how fabulous their food is.

Ingredients
4 cups Spinach
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped or pressed
Chilli to taste, preferably fresh
1 Tbspn olive oil or coconut oil

 

Method
Heat oil in pan.
Saute onion until nearly cooked.
Add garlic and chilli and continue to saute momentarily.
Add spinach and cook until wilted.
Remove from heat and savor.

 

Too easy!
You can enjoy this as a side dish or as part of your main meal with a serve of brown rice or any protein dish.
