Sometimes I feel ashamed at how weak I’ve been in the past and how I’ve failed at holding on to my motivation to lose weight.
Especially when I see heroic examples of those who have a motivation to lose weight that is so powerful that quitting is simply not an option. It never comes into the equation. And I think that’s one of the problems all of us who have ever failed at losing weight before experience. Our motivation to lose weight was never powerful enough for us in the beginning.
So what can you find in your life that is a compelling enough reason to lose weight and keep it off forever?
Have you found it yet?
Have you really searched your soul and worked out what would keep you going through the ups and the downs? We all experience them. But what we do in that moment of crisis defines us. And if we choose to weaken and lose our motivation to lose weight, then it wasn’t the right motivation in the first place.
To see motivation in action … watch this …
Need I say more?
Search deep and find YOUR motivation to lose weight. Then we can move forward together, work as a community and get this done once and for all!
Sundays are so special to me as they give me an opportunity to slow down and reflect on my motivation to lose weight, how I’m progressing, my successes and my challenges.
I started this journey 5 weeks ago, not really knowing how it would turn out, but hoping against all hope this time my motivation to lose weight would prevail and things would be different. You see, I’ve tried every diet ever invented. If you missed my list of failed diets check them out here. And this isn’t even a complete list. I have believed every lie ever sold to me by the diet industry. And I am FED UP WITH ALL OF IT!
So 5 weeks ago I committed to trying one last and final time, to shed 50lbs and get into the best shape of my life. I found my motivation to lose weight and I decided to do something I’ve never done before when it comes to weight loss. I threw away the bathroom scales, I have no clue what my measurements are, I’m not counting calories (as a serial dieter I do have a rough idea how many calories I am consuming however) and I’m not measuring calories burned during exercise.
So what AM I doing?
I’m going back to a time when things weren’t so darned complicated.
I’m going back to a time when if you ate sensibly and worked out a little bit you were pretty much able to stay in shape.
I’m going back to a time when, if your jeans got a bit tight you simply looked yourself in the mirror and said, “You know what … it’s time to cut back!”
I’m going back to a time when you didn’t need a pharmaceutical degree to understand the ingredients in a bottle of sauce.
Basically, I’m going back to a time when they didn’t have junk food, and the foods we ate didn’t need chemicals to make them taste good.
Do you know that chemicals make you fat? Your body wasn’t designed to ingest chemicals and doesn’t know what to do with them. So more often than not it just stores these toxins as fat.
So the easiest way to avoid this, is simply not to eat them.
So this time around, I’m going as natural as I possibly can. I have a mantra, ‘If God didn’t make it – don’t eat it.” In other words, God didn’t make Diet Coke, Diet Shakes, Diet Cookies, Diet Pills, Diet anything. God made glorious fruits, nuts, vegetables, grains, legumes and yes he made cows, sheep, fish and chicken as well.
My basic philosophy is that cavemen didn’t diet. They didn’t need to because they didn’t have McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts on every street corner!
We need to diet because we’ve been corrupted by drool inducing advertisements tempting us with their chemically laden, high-sugar, high-fat content, highly addictive toxic foods.
If we could only wean ourselves off of these chemical time bombs for just one month we would notice a huge improvement in our health and our well-being. We’d start to feel energized and alive again. And our dormant taste buds would come back to life and rejoice in our new-found food choices.
So this Sunday I reflect on the past 5 weeks.
I have stuck 99.9% to my commitment to eat only naturally occurring foods (I cheated with half a sausage one day – Yuck!) And no, I’m not organic … way too complicated for my liking … but I’m only putting foods into my body that are naturally occurring in nature.
I have stuck 100% to my commitment to not drink any alcohol for 90 days. This was a really hard one for me. I love my wine! I love my Dirty Vodka Martini’s. I love my Gin and Tonics. I love my Margaritas. But for 90 days I have committed to not touching a drop.
I have stuck 100% to my commitment to exercising 6 days per week and I chose P90X as my choice of exercise because I needed a challenge and I love a challenge. Tony has two great expression … “Just keep hitting play” and “Do your best, and forget the rest.” He keeps me motivated and I enjoy my workouts with him. P90X is not for everyone, and I’m not a Beach Body coach nor will I ever be one. I just really like the program.
What I’ve found after 5 weeks of sticking to my commitments is that without all the pressure of the bathroom scales, the tape measure and the calorie counting, and all the traditional ways of dieting, I’m losing inches!
I see it in the way my clothes fit me. I am getting toned, and stronger and my core is ridiculous. You know those rock hard Gwen Stefani abs I keep talking about? They’re in there … just hidden under a layer of blubber right now. But that’s all good. I see progress.
The purpose of this blog post is to document my journey, and to prove that with the right mindset and an unbreakable motivation to lose weight, that we CAN lose weight AND keep it off forever by NEVER DIETING AGAIN, and by simply doing an exercise that we look forward to and enjoy. I believe that it really is that simple.
Yes, I understand that there are some hurdles and obstacles and that I’m over simplifying it just a bit. But what I want to prove in this 90 day journey is that the diet industry doesn’t have any of the right answers for you. I want to prove once and for all that diets DON’T work and that a simple common sense approach to eating and exercise will get you the results you so desperately desire and deserve. There is no quick fix. I’ve been looking for a quick fix for 33 years! It doesn’t exist!
So follow along with me here as I unlock the REAL SECRETS to losing weight that the diet industry don’t want you to know about.
The first thing you need to find however, is an invincible, unstoppable, motivation to lose weight. You have to want this more than you’ve ever wanted anything in your life. As we progress we’ll work together and discover what truly motivates you and get you moving towards your destiny of being in the best shape of your life.
I promise you, if I can do this, anyone can do this. I’ve been trying to lose the same 50lbs for 33 years and it has kept me more miserable than I can put into words. This journey is for anyone who has ever felt defeated at the hands of the diet industry. There IS a better way to lose weight and keep it off forever. Follow me here … we can do this together.
The subject of coffee can be quite controversial so when the subject of coffee and weight loss came up I knew I had to look deeper into this controversial little bean. So let’s delve into coffee and weight loss and see if we can give it the thumbs up or not.
The Cons of Coffee and Weight Loss
For a long time I’ve been put off coffee because of the way it can negatively affect blood sugar levels which in turn affects how we burn fat. Basically caffeine raises blood sugar levels which results in a spike in insulin being released in your blood stream. The insulin is trying to find a way to regulate your blood sugar so the easiest thing for it to do is store the excess sugar as fat.
The other issue too is that elevated blood sugar levels can cause you to crave poor food choices.
Another aspect of coffee and weight loss that I’m not all gung-ho for is the fact that it does have diurretic properties. You’ll lose water weight because of it and that might look great on the bathroom scales (that you should have thrown away by now anyway!) but is not indicative of losing body fat which is what you’re ultimately going for. So remember to keep up your water intake.
The Pros of Coffee and Weight Loss
Coffee and weight loss seem to go together as coffee acts as an appetite suppressant. It’s weird, because as you know I took Diet Pills a while back as a way to suppress my appetite and they didn’t work a darn. I started drinking coffee again after my IBS scare seemed to be a thing of the past, and I noticed that I was no longer ravenous. I didn’t even link it to the fact that I was drinking coffee again until I started doing this research.
Another way that coffee and weight loss are linked together is the fact that coffee has thermogenic properties. Caffeine in coffee has been found to boost your metabolism which allows you to effectively burn off calories. So if you’re burning calories more effectively that means there are less calories being converted and stored as fat.
Coffee and weight loss also seem to do a little tango when it comes to exercise too. Having a quick little espresso or a black coffee before a workout can give you an extra boost of energy and a put a cheeky little bounce in your step. You’ll work out just a little harder, walk a little faster, dance a little longer, therefore burn a little more.
So how much coffee is the right amount?
I would say definitely no more than 3 cups a day. Any more than that and we might have to peel you off the ceiling. Anything in moderation is safe.
And keep in mind that coffee is fat-free, carb-free, calorie-free. So don’t ruin a good thing by adding cream and sugar. A splash of lo-fat milk is all you should be grabbing for.
I’ve been around the block many times when it comes to the subject of losing weight and the main reason I’ve failed for 33 years is that I was never fully committed to my motivation to lose weight.
I didn’t want it bad enough and my motivation to lose weight wasn’t strong enough.
I never understood that until right now.
You see right now, my motivation to lose weight is invincible. Nothing can break it this time. I have temptation all around me, and yet it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I wear my motivation to lose weight like an invisible shield. It’s all encompassing.
Now I know it’s been said that in order for you to successfully lose weight you need to have the right people around you and to stay away from temptation. But I’m starting to think that’s a little unrealistic. There are always going to be office parties, birthday parties, weddings, dinners out … you can’t stop living just because you’ve decided to get healthy. Life goes on and you’ve got to find a way to adapt, or you’ll fail yet again. You simply have to develop the mindset of someone who is proactive about their health and won’t let any temptation deter them.
Let’s take it out of context for a minute. Alcoholics don’t give up their social life because they can’t drink alcohol. They can still go to a social gathering and have fun without a beer in their had. Same with you! Again, it’s a mindset!
And if you’re firm with your convictions, the people around you will respect you for that. And if they don’t, be firm with them and explain that this is important to you and for them to respect your motivation to lose weight. And who knows, you may even recruit a few to follow in your path when they see your steely resolve and your results. Nothing irks more than seeing someone stick to their guns and get results.
But again, and this is KEY, YOU HAVE TO WANT THIS more than you’ve EVER wanted ANYTHING before. Seriously, I really believe that’s the difference.
Your mindset and your motivation to lose weight comes first. All the other stuff then becomes quite academic. I can teach you the academics of losing weight easily. But if you seriously want to lose weight and keep it off forever, it all starts with what’s inside your head. I can’t teach you how to find your motivation to lose weight. You have to dig deep and find that yourself.
See if this video doesn’t make you see things differently.
And if you’re still making excuses, check out yesterday’s blog. It will move you … my jaw dropped to the ground in shame when I watched it the first time.
I can’t believe I’m writing about Kim Kardashian and her cellulite.
But I feel I must because it’s cr@p like this that makes the rest of us run ourselves to death on the ‘dreadmill’ trying in vain to attain the bodies of the women we admire most, when they don’t even have the results we covet.
The only difference is, they have great airbrushers to remove their cellulite, and we don’t!
These photos were taken for an issue of Complex magazine and the website mistakenly posted the “pre-airbrushed” photos instead of the touched up ones. When asked about it Kim said, “So what – I have a little cellulite.” Paris Hilton went so far as to say her cellulite looks like “cottage cheese stuffed in a garbage bag.”
But here’s the thing. So many of us idolize the bodies of the rich and famous, when in fact many of these bodies aren’t real in the first place. So if the rich and famous can only get there by way of Picasso’s Airbrush, why are we killing ourselves to reach an ideal that’s not real?
Wouldn’t it simply be healthier to reach our own ideal?
When the gorgeous Jessica Alba has to be airbrushed to perfection, what hope is there for the rest of us if we try and uphold these unrealistic ideals?
So, this is just another example of how we are set up to fail in our quest to get in the best shape of our lives. Some of us will never be a Jessica Alba, or a Jennifer Lopez, or even a Lara Croft for that matter.
But what’s important is that we set realistic goals and simply be the best that we can be.
Kudos to Kate Winslet who in 2003 was livid when she was excessively and unrealistically airbrushed by British GQ. She stated publicly, “I do not look like that, and more importantly, I don’t desire to look like that.”
But it doesn’t stop there … Kitty Couric, Andy Roddick, Faith Hill, Madonna and more have all been massively airbrushed to show a more perfect image. To see more retouching scandals click here.
And who can forget the hoo-haa surrounding the scandalous L’Oreal airbrushing of Julia Roberts and Christie Turlington. Their images were so digitally altered that the advertisements were banned in the UK.
But I’m not done yet. The weight loss industry is the biggest con job of all. How many times have you seen a commercial for the latest diet pill or workout gadget that is guaranteed to get you from the weight you are to a supermodel in just a few weeks?
Yes, I want to believe the results too … but watch this video and see if it doesn’t irk you just a bit.
Mad? Mad enough to believe that you’ve been lied to by an industry that is supposed to be helping you?
I’m not saying they’re all bad. Hey, I’m doing P90X so I can’t possibly say that. But on the whole, the cards are stacked against you.
My one driving passion that keeps me going is that I want to prove that you can get in the best shape of your life by simply eating healthy foods and finding an exercise that you love and look forward to doing.
Yes, other factors do count, but the basics are pretty simple. Eat from a selection of healthy foods designed to fuel your body, and burn calories doing something that you love doing. It’s that simple. Truly. There’s no complicated science to it! The weight loss industry would have you believe it’s complicated – but it’s not.
It took me a long time to realize that I was missing a secret ingredient in my quest to lose weight. The Italians knew about this ingredient. They cook with it every day. No Italian meal would ever be created without it. Do you know what it is?
The secret missing Italian ingredient you need to lose weight, is LOVE.
I don’t know how many times I’ve thrown food down my throat, with very little thought about it’s preparation, it’s origins or even it’s content. Food for so many years was a source of anything but nutrition and enjoyment. It was a means to an end.
But it wasn’t until just recently when I read an article about how the Italians cook with love, that I understood that food could be so much more. From the selection and handling of food, to the preparation and presentation of food, to the consumption of food, the Italians are passionate about their food. Food is always a cause of celebration, of bringing family members together, and is always mixed with fun and laughter.
Casanova himself was reported to have said, “Sex is like eating and eating is like sex.”
Need I say more on the subject of food and love?
Now practicality must intervene. We can’t host an Italian Festival whenever we want to eat. But there are a few little things we can do to spice up our relationship with food and help us lose weight as well.
For starters, choose your food with love at the supermarket.
When you’re in the vege section, don’t just grab any old vegetable. Really look for the most attractive foods you can find. Turn them over, inspect them. Make sure they are worthy of your dinner plate.
When you’re preparing your food, be calm and think loving thoughts.
I know a few dinners I’ve prepared in anger were about as tasty as a pair of old boots. Food seems to know when it’s being loved or not. Think Jamie Oliver NOT Gordon Ramsay.
Present your food lovingly.
For some reason it just tastes better. My Mum always says that the success of a meal is in the presentation. And it’s so true. Don’t slap your food together like a dog’s breakfast. Put some love into it. It really doesn’t take that much imagination to make your food look beautiful.
And lastly, slow down and enjoy your food.
When was the last time you actually tasted your food? And I mean really tasted your food.
One of the reasons why you lose weight when eating in this way, is that when you slow down to savor your food, your stomach as a chance to signal you when you’re starting to feel full. When you eat too fast, your stomach doesn’t have a chance to keep up with your fork so it can only send you a message when you’re stuffed! And this doesn’t help you lose weight.
So add a little love to your food. You’ll be amazed how this one simple ingredient can help you lose weight.
Gotta run and do Yoga!
Hope you enjoyed this post. Would love to hear your thoughts.
P.S. If you’re wondering what this post is all about, you’ll need to start at the beginning on Day 1. That post explains my crusade here.
I have always wondered if there was a best time to exercise.
Personally I always believed that first thing in the morning was best for a variety of reasons.
I felt that if I started my day off right then it would set the tone for the rest of the day. There was always something very invigorating about doing Yoga to a sunrise.
But as I got older, I noticed that it was harder and harder to motivate myself to get out of bed and perform whatever self-diagnosed torturous workout was in store for the day.
I found that I was far more inspired to get up and go to work, than I was to get up and go exercise.
So for me, the best time to exercise started to be early in the evening.
Now, I’m going to give you my reasons why I think early in the evening is the best time to exercise:
I have a theory that my metabolism will speed up and burn off my dinner faster, and therefore prevent some of it resting on my hips overnight.
I find myself looking forward to a break from work, and now see my early evening exercise as a welcome respite from work.
I’ve had my afternoon snack at around 3:00pm so by early evening I still have energy but I’m not overloaded for a workout.
I’m warm and limber from my day’s activities.
After an early evening workout my motivation to lose weight is kicked into high gear, and previous evening temptations do not take a hold of me as they did in the past.
Now, there is very little scientific evidence to suggest that the best time to exercise is either morning, noon or night. To be quite frank, the best time to exercise is when you feel most motivated to exercise.
If you’re an early morning person and starting the day at the crack of dawn with a brisk run on the beach gets you excited, then go for it!
But if you think the best time to exercise is in the morning and you’re dragging your reluctant butt out of bed every morning here’s an article on “Why Evening Is The Best Time To Exercise.” This will let you to hit the snooze button one more time without feeling guilty ; )
At the end of the day, we must all find an exercise routine that we look forward to … not one that we dread with each passing minute on the clock. Because if we don’t enjoy it, we’re not going to stick with it. And that’s half the problem with losing weight right there.
We know we have to do it. But if we don’t enjoy it, we’re not going to stick with it!
So, what’s the best time to exercise? Whenever you feel like it! But just get out there and do it!

Do you know you can lose weight with cinnamon? And no, I am not talking about Cinnamon Buns!
You can lose weight with cinnamon but adding it to your Skim Milk Cappuccino, or mix it in with your Lo-Fat Natural Yogurt and Honey. Wherever you like a dash of cinnamon, just add it and know that it’s helping you lose weight.
Cinnamon has been used for centuries to heal a host of ailments including bloating, indigestion and diarrhea.
But for the purpose of this post you can also lose weight with cinnamon because of the way it affects your blood sugar levels. It actively lowers your blood sugar levels whilst increasing your insulin levels which increases the metabolism of glucose.
The most exciting thing that you’ll notice straight away is that cinnamon reduces your sugar cravings. And if you don’t have any sugar cravings it makes it that much easier to avoid the sugary things that tempt you and sabotage your motivation to lose weight.
Another way you lose weight with cinnamon is that it affects the way you metabolize sugar in your system and actually stops it being converted to fat! How incredible is that?
However, the benefits don’t stop there. Another way you can lose weight with cinnamon is that it slows down the process of food leaving your stomach so you get a fuller feeling faster, and it lasts longer.
But that’s not even the best part! Do you want to know what the really great thing about cinnamon is???
So, do you need any more reasons to add cinnamon to your shopping list?
I promise you, there are so many healthy, natural ways you can lose weight and keep it off forever by adopting a whole new approach to weight loss.
The diet industry have got it wrong. They don’t have your best interests at heart. They only have their own interests at heart. How many diets have you been on? Can you tell me how many calories there are in a banana? Is that how many diets you’ve been on? Me too. And none of them worked long term. Why? Because diets don’t work. Common sense is the best diet you can get.
My 90 day challenge is about proving that you can get in the best shape of your life, without dieting, without watching your calories, without weighing yourself and without measuring yourself.
I am documenting every step of my journey and at the end of it I will prove that losing weight and keeping it off forever will come down to the right motivitation to lose weight and finding an eating plan and an exercise plan that you love and look forward to. I know there are more factors that come into play. Believe me – I know all the factors. I’ve been dieting for 33 years, (you can see my list here) so I know the hurdles. But I also now know how to overcome them
Join me here as I blog daily about my journey, and share with you tips and insights that may help you on your journey to getting into the best shape of your life, once and for all.
Here’s to your success. You know you deserve it : )
P.S. If you have any of your own diet secrets to share, spill the beans below. We all need to know.
If you enjoyed this post please do leave a comment or click ‘like’ to spread the love.
No matter how many sit-ups, crunches or planks you do, you’ll never get rid of belly fat just by exercise alone.
But before I reveal the vegetables that will help get rid of belly fat we need to understand what can cause it in the first place. A few of these reasons may surprise you.
Late Night Snacking
No surprises here. Who remembers Oprah Winfrey’s famous line, “After 8, not even a grape.” There’s wisdom in this mantra.
Your dinner needs a good 3 hours to fully digest. Going to bed with a full belly interrupts this process. So if you want to get rid of belly fat, keep the snacking to an absolute minimum before bed. And if you must snack, reach for lo-fat natural yogurt, or a banana, or maybe even some nuts.
It’s a well known fact that as we age our metabolism slows down which means the way we burned calories in our twenties isn’t the same way we’ll burn them in our forties. So we need to take this into account. How many girls do you know who were as skinny as a rake at high-school, could eat whatever they wanted and never had to diet, who have lost that edge as they aged? And sadly, an aging metabolism can lead to fat depositing itself around your belly.
For some of you, if you really want to get rid of belly fat you’re going to have to look at your stress levels. Now stress itself doesn’t make you fat. But stress can play havoc with your hormones. When you’re under stress your body releases cortisol which increases blood sugar. This can play havoc with your metabolism and lead to unhealthy cravings. To understand the effects of stress and how it hinders you getting rid of belly fat, click this link.
I’m just throwing this one out there. I learned a trick from a really fit gym instructor one day. I asked her how to get rid of belly fat and she said, “Stand up and suck it in!” Not quite the answer I was looking for. And then she did something that utterly shocked me. This gorgeous, slim, sexy, toned gym instructor let her stomach muscles go and there before my eyes was belly fat!
So, once you start working on your core and you start to feel your Gwen Stefani abs rocking under your belly fat, start learning to suck it in. You’ll lose inches in seconds.
OK, fun stuff aside. How do we get rid of belly fat – seriously?
The bad news is, there’s no quick fix on how to reduce belly fat immediately. If someone promises you they have one, they’re lying.
The good news is, there are foods you can add to your diet that will help stimulate the burning of belly fat. We’ve already discussed medical research supporting lo-fat natural yogurt as a way to reduce belly fat, but there are a few vegetables as well that will get your belly-fat-burning-furnace all fired up.
Cruciferous Vegetables – Super Veges!
This class of vegetable contains unique phytonutrients that help you in your fight to get rid of belly fat.
Harmful chemicals in our environment can play havoc with our hormones and stimulate our bodies to store belly fat. Phytonutrients fight against the effects of certain hormonal imbalances.
So what do you want to be adding to your dinner? Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Kale, Bok Choy, Cabbage, Collard Greens, Rutabaga, Arugula (Rocket), Watercress, Radishes & Wasabi.
So there you have it! Mum knew best when she said “Eat your greens!”
Losing weight and keeping it off forever is a journey. There are no quick fixes and diets don’t work. The reason I’m writing this blog is to prove once and for all, that with pure focus and determination and a sound motivation to lose weight, we can all lose weight and keep it off forever by never dieting again, by never weighing ourselves again, and by eating foods that fulfill us and nourish us.
FOR THE RECORD:
I am not an affiliate of BeachBody. I am not selling or promoting BeachBody.
I simply enjoy P90X and Tony makes me laugh. And how many people do you know who actually enjoy their exercise? I’ll be honest. I hated it in the beginning. If you read some of my first posts I just wanted to puke!
But after a full month, I’m starting to feel my own Gwen Stefani rockin’ hard abs start to form under my belly fat. I’m starting to see long limber limbs from a month’s worth of Yoga. I don’t have any sugar cravings or any food cravings. I am happy! For the first time ever, I can see that I am losing weight, starting to look great and I don’t have a clue what the scales say! And I don’t care. All I know is, what I see is starting to look good.
As I progress through my 90 day challenge I will share with you the things that I am learning. And after 90 days I’ll show you the results of what can be achieved by never dieting again.
Deep down we all know they don’t work. If they did work, why would new ones keep coming out? Why would it be a multi-billion dollar industry? It’s like the casino industry. Excited punters hoping to win big, becoming more and more desperate with each roll of the dice, knowing deep down that the odds are always stacked against them.
It’s the same thing with the diet industry. Desperate overweight people, excitedly taking a gamble on the next weight loss guru promising “easy, fast results with our revolutionary new technology designed to give you the sculpted body of your dreams.”
And where does most of that technology end up? Under the bed collecting dust. And don’t get me started on the diets! Diet’s we can’t stick to because they’re either too complicated, too regimented or worse yet, too boring!
I should know! I’ve been trying to lose the same 50lbs for the past 33 years! You’ll see a list of them in my first post.
This is a journey to unlock the real secrets to losing weight that the diet industry doesn’t want you to know. Follow my journey as I reveal all.
