Party Time!

Do you really think the ancient Greek Gods ran around trying to calculate the amount of carbs in wine before they had their massive parties?

Do you think when Aphrodite was being wooed by Anchises she had an internal voice asking,”How many carbs in wine again?”

History tells us that wine has been around since the dawn of time, reaching back as far as 6,000 BC.

By many accounts wine was understood to have medicinal powers and was used to heal wounds, ease the pain of child birth and treat a myriad of ailments.

Today however we simply imbibe for pleasure. Some of us use it for too much pleasure and that’s where the problem with losing weight lies.

There are many reports as to the health benefits of wine, specifically red wine. In the early 1990’s research was conducted in France trying to ascertain why the French had such a low incidence of heart disease when they consumed a diet full of creamy Camemberts, Côte de Bœuf and sumptuous Souffles. What they discovered was that it perhaps came down to the fact that the French love their wine. This became known as the “French Paradox.”

It appears that within red wine there is an ingredient called “Resveratrol” which studies have shown increases longevity and reduces the risks of cancer.

So armed with this knowledge should we care about carbs in wine?

I’m a huge fan of wine. I LOVE it! But for this 90 Day Challenge I have chosen to go without wine, not because of the carbs in wine, but because I understand the effects of alcohol on my  system.

With knowledge comes power. When you understand the effects of what goes into your mouth, it allows you to make an educated choice. Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance leads to misery.

Now before you get your knickers in a twist, I’m not saying don’t drink wine. What I am saying is that if you want to get in the best shape of your life, consider giving it up for just a bit.

Alcohol has empty calories. There’s no nutritional value there whatsoever. And the problem with drinking alcohol is that it impairs your judgement and therefore can impair your motivation to lose weight.

I can’t tell you how many times a bottle of wine has led me down a slippery path of pizza and chicken wings. In my opinion it’s not the carbs in wine you should be worried about, it’s the junk that goes down after the wine!

So for the sake of your goal to get in the best shape of your life, I would simply recommend holding off on the vino or whatever your poison is for a little while. And if you must grab for an alcoholic bevvie, then at least make it a glass of wine as opposed to a rum ‘n’ coke.

As much as I’m an advocate for NOT counting calories I’m also an advocate for knowing what’s in my food and drinks. The minute you start mixing alcohol with coke, lemonade, tonic & dry you’re heading for a calorie overload. Worse yet, your body will focus only on trying to process the alcohol and all the other foods that it can’t process in due course because of the alcohol are going to be converted into body fat, packed up neatly and sent to your hips for permanent storage. Does that sound like fun?

So if you can, ditch the alcohol for a little while, and when you get back into it, develop an appreciation for wine. Wine is to be savored not gulped. Drink it slowly and fully appreciate what the ancient Greeks gave us. They valued wine so much they even devoted a Greek God to wine. You don’t see any Greek Gods dedicated to Rum ‘n’ Coke! Hmmm … makes you think … or not.

And if it’s proven to be good for you and you drink in moderation who gives a damn anyway about carbs in wine? I sure don’t and neither should you!
