Childhood obesity in America is at epidemic levels.

childhood obesityThis is such a sad indictment of our so-called ‘advanced’ culture. How crazy is it that the more advanced we get, the sicker we become?

Do you remember how it was when you were a kid? Childhood obesity was unheard of.

I grew up without a computer, I didn’t know what email was until I was in my 30’s and I still have trouble downloading, exporting and converting. It’s another world.

But the world I grew up in saw kids play outside until the sun came down.

This new world has kids chained to a computer for an average of 7.5 hours a day. That’s not healthy. In fact it’s a recipe for disaster! Childhood obesity is at epidemic levels in the US. One third of our child population is overweight.

Just look around you at the kids of today. They don’t look like the kids of a generation ago do they?

Is it their fault? No.childhood obesity

It’s ours.

We feed them food with very little nutritional value, sometimes because we don’t know any better, and we’ve lost our emphasis on exercise.

All throughout my blog I ask the question, “What Is YOUR Motivation To Lose Weight?” And sometimes I put it out there, that we will do more for those we love than we will ever do for ourselves.

Do you have children who are also struggling to lose weight?

My disgust for some people in the weight loss industry has just sunk to an all time low.

It breaks my heart to learn that they fell prey to the unscrupulous practices of two Hollywood ‘Doctors’ who pull in around $21 million per month with their magical ‘guaranteed weight loss’ surgery.

I came across this story today and wanted to share it with you.

Apart from saving his life, Keith’s motivation to lose weight is so that he can take his dog for a walk … “wherever she wanted to go.”

So maybe finding your motivation to lose weight isn’t as elusive as you think. Maybe it’s about being able to enjoy everyday activities that many take for granted … like being fit enough to walk the dog.

Keith Martin – The World’s Fattest Man

The world’s fattest man has started dieting after doctors told him he wouldn’t live to turn 50 unless he did something to lose weight from his massive 368kg.

Keith Martin, 42, hasn’t left his house for 10 years and his girth, at 1.8m, is more than his height, 1.75m.

Mr Martin told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper that finding out he was the fattest man on Earth was the catalyst for him attempting to lose weight.

But he has a long way to go to change his diet and his size.

When Mr Martin was at his worst he was eating up to 20,000 calories a day, comprising an array of fat and sugar-laden foods and treats.

The food included a packet of bacon, six sausages, six eggs and toast and beans for breakfast, the Daily Mail reported.

Lunch was all that and more and then there was the pizzas, kebabs and curries for dinner.

And the eating didn’t stop there. It included chocolate, biscuits, fizzy drinks and coffee with lots of sugar.

Now, Mr Martin is trying to restrict himself to 1500 calories a day – and says he’s lost 10cm.

“Finding out that I’m the fattest man in the world has been the wake-up call I needed. I don’t blame anyone other than myself for this horrible situation,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Doctors have told me I won’t reach 50 unless I do something drastic. I need to lose half my weight before they’ll give me a gastric band. I’d love to be as slim as I was in my youth, but what I really want is simply to sit comfortably in a normal-sized chair. I am determined to get this weight off.”

Mr Martin last left his house on September 11, 2001.

He said his life changed after his mother died and he started eating big amounts every time he was upset. Before he knew it his eating and his weight were out of control.

“I didn’t think there was anything I could do. My self esteem was so low – it always has been that I just didn’t care about myself,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I just want to be happy, without needing food to make me happy. I want to be able to take my border collie Cheyanne for a walk – I’d take her wherever she wanted to go.”

My Motivation To Lose Weight | Pepsi, Coke and Cancer | Day 60 of 90 Day Challenge

coke and cancerPepsi, Coke and Cancer … what on earth does that have to do with my blog? Well, one of the purposes of my blog is to bring you information that you can use to help you lose weight, keep it off forever and live a healthy life.

This post falls into the category of ‘live a healthier life.’

If you’re following my philosophy of “If God didn’t make it don’t eat it,” I know you know, that that philosophy also extends to “If God didn’t make it don’t DRINK it” as well. And as far as I know, there is no natural spring out there pumping out liquid Coke and Pepsi.

Now, I’m not an alarmist by any measure, but this headline caught my attention:

“Coke, Pepsi to drop level of ‘cancer’ chemical”

 

WASHINGTON (AFP) – “Coca-Cola and Pepsi said Friday they have lowered levels of a chemical in caramel coloring to comply with a California law, but insisted the drinks pose no health risks and recipes will not change.

The move allows the companies to avoid having to label products with a cancer warning due to what the health-conscious west coast state has ruled are high levels of 4-methylimidazole, shown to cause cancer in lab rodents.”

I find this disturbing. Especially as they’re only dropping the level of 4-MEI in California and will gradually do the same all over the world.

No doubt you’ve all heard the urban myths that if you leave a tooth or a nail in a glass of Coke it’ll dissolve overnight. Is that true? I don’t know. I’ve never tried it.coke and cancer

But what I do know is the reason Coke and cancer keep getting thrown around in the same sentence is that the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It has a pH level of 2.8.

The concentrate in Coke is so corrosive that the commercial trucks carrying it have to display the Hazardous Material sign used to indicate they’re carrying highly corrosive materials.

I wrote a post a while back about the dangers of drinking diet soda.

“Diet soda is not only addictive, but just one diet soda can kill the neurons in your brain within six to eight hours. These chemicals literally “excite” the nuerons to death, which is why they call them “excitotoxins.” Their regular consumption can cause brain damage and cancer, as aspartame increases your cancer risk.” ~ Dr Russell Blaylock in Suzanne Somers, “Breakthrough. So this should give you enough reason to get rid of all soda from your diet. If you like drinking fizzy drinks, then move to Mineral Water. The jury is still out about the health benefits, but they certainly do not lead to poor health. So if you must drink bubbles, make them mineral bubbles!

Personally my favorite is St Pellegrino. It’s been bottled at the source in St Pellegrino Terme since 1395 and it is said that Leonardo da Vinci visited the town in 1509 to sample the town’s miraculous water and later wrote a paper on the subject. That’s good enough for me.

In Conclusion

If you have not done so already, eliminate all soda from your diet. Do Coke and cancer belong in the same sentence? I don’t know … as I’ve always maintained, I’m not nutritionist, or a dietician and I don’t have any degrees in chemistry. All I have now is a Degree in Common Sense.

 

My Motivation To Lose Weight | Jamie Oliver Loses It! | Day 59 of 90 Day Challenge

jamie oliverJamie Oliver, the charming UK chef famous for revealing pink slime in McDonald’s burgers and campaigning for healthy foods in schools lost it with an Australian reporter.

When asked if he’d gained a few pounds whilst Down Under Jamie Oliver got upset and called him a b!tch! What I find extraordinary about this whole business is not the fact that Jamie Oliver snapped, but the fact that the question was asked in the first place, especially to a chef!

Jamie Oliver by all accounts knows how to eat healthy, does his best to eat healthy and works out a couple of times a week. But he’s a chef for goodness sakes! His whole world revolves around food. A little taste here and there, naturally he’s not going to look like David Beckham. But he’s hardly got a weight problem!

And this is where I take issue. Where do people get off commenting on another person’s weight?

If someone has a big nose do you go up to them and say, “Gee what a big snoz you have. How did that happen?”

Weight is enough of a personal issue without having other people, sometimes complete strangers making offensive comments.

This can lead to permanent psychological scarring.

At the age of 16 when she starting gaining attention for her musical talents, someone made a snide comment about her weight saying she was a little chubby.

She went on a controlled diet that eventually lead her into a vicious cycle of anorexia and bulimia.

She was dead by 32 from complications associated with extreme dieting. And it all started with one thoughtless comment.

Why do we see people with weight issues as easy targets?

My emotional scarring occurred when I was 8. I’ll never forget it. I had a crush on a boy and when he found out he told me to leave him alone and his parting words were, “You’re too fat!” I was only 8.

Two years later I was drinking a bottle of Apple shampoo because I’d read this would help me lose weight.

What on earth was I doing dieting at that age? Pure insanity.

I developed a severe eating disorder by the time I was in my late teens that lasted for over 10 years. Probably the most miserable years of my life. One day I’ll talk about it here … but not today.

Did it all start with one snide comment? Who knows?

So to Jamie Oliver I say: “Don’t apologize. You nailed it with your response.”

Do you remember my story about Melissa Morris? Her motivation to lose weight was invincible. The only advice I would have for Robert is that he needs to WANT to lose weight more than anything he’s ever wanted before.

And that’s my message here today.

If you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off forever, it really does come down to how badly you want it.

Because if you don’t want it enough, it’s not going to happen. It takes courage, determination and fortitude to see it through.

I’m at a loss for words right now … unusual for me …

Motivation To Lose Weight | Britney Says No To Size Zero | Day 52 of P90X 90 Day Challenge

motivation to lose weightNow hold your horses before you think I’m going to scoff at this one. I’ve always loved Britney. Each to their own musical tastes I say.  But I’ve always adorned her spirit, her smile and her naivety.

But when she came out with this, maintaining a healthy body can be hard work but is more than worth it … sometimes it’s hard to be motivated. But once you get up and do it you feel like you’ve conquered the world,” she went right to the top of my “Most Admired” List. Check it out – Britney Says No To Size 0 – just fabulous!

One of the reasons many of us develop issues with weight in the first place is because we see anorexic broom sticks walking down a runway in Milan and believe that this is the ideal.

So we starve ourselves stupid to attain an unrealistic ideal and end up in a vicious cycle of self-loathing and if you’re really lucky a dose of bulimia as (now I’m being snide – forgive me). This was my life.motivation to lose weight

I believed the lies I saw in magazines and believed that if I didn’t measure up to the likes of Elle, Claudia and Naomi (dating myself aren’t I?) then I wasn’t OK. And these were ‘healthy’ models.

Today’s models are another breed altogether! Does this look attractive? Let alone healthy???

I’m very fortunate today as I have a husband who looks at these women and can’t understand why they are considered beautiful. And he looks at me and loves me exactly how I am.

It would appear that I am the only person who has a problem with my appearance. But where did it begin?

When I was a baby I would have only known that I was perfect.

Up until I went to school I made no distinctions between tall and short or fat and slim.

School changed all of that pretty quickly.

All of a sudden I was informed that there was something “wrong” with me. Life was never quite the same again.

So for me this is a very personal and sometimes painful journey as I reflect on what started this crusade and how long ago it began.

I’m thrilled to see role models such as Britney, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Fergie all embracing their curves. It makes it so much easier on the rest of us to accept us as we are, whatever our optimal look is for us.

For some, living life as a larger woman is just fine. I find many larger women to be extraordinarily beautiful because they have embraced their voluptuousness and they are confident with who they are. But if that’s not for you, then that’s OK too.

You’ll find the path to getting into the best shape of your life, without ever having to diet again right here!

My Motivation To Lose Weight | Everything You Know About Dieting Is Wrong | Day 44 of P90X 90 Day Challenge

 motivation to lose weightMy motivation to lose weight, to prove that diets don’t work and that there is a better way to lose weight and keep it off forever is getting scientific backing.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this headline: Scientists say, “Total Rethink Needed On Dieting.”

Duh!!! Diets don’t work. Does it really take the scientific community to point this out???

Just look around. The multibillion dollar weight loss industry has failed us because they have a vested interest in keeping us fat! They know that deprivation and complication don’t work, but their marketing is so darned good, we eat it all up don’t we?

As soon as we hear those hypnotic words; Easy Weight Loss, Lose Weight Fast, How To Lose 10lbs In 7 Days we get sucked into the promises that this time it will be different, this time I can do it, this is the diet that’s going to work.

But the reality prevails: DIETS DON’T WORK. Deprivation doesn’t work. Complication doesn’t work.

Here’s an excerpt from the article I was reading:

VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) – “‘Everything you know about dieting is wrong,’ say US scientists who have devised a new formula for calculating calories and weight loss that they hope will revolutionize the way people tackle obesity.

Obesity rates have doubled worldwide in the past 30 years, coinciding with a growing food surplus, and the ensuing epidemic has sparked a multibillion dollar weight loss industry that has largely failed to curb the problem.”

So what does work then?

If you’ve been reading my blog posts you already know my thoughts on this.

If you seriously want to lose weight and keep it off forever, it only takes 5 steps.

  1. Find an empowering motivation to lose weight that is invincible.
  2. Get moving. Find an exercise you like/love to do. That’s the only way you’ll stick to it. For some ideas read “But I HATE Exercise!”
  3. Change your eating habits. Throw out the junk. To keep it real simple, “If God didn’t make it – don’t eat it.” Junk food will keep you fat. There’s no way around it. It’s bad for you, your body can’t process it, it’s toxic and will always land on your hips and keep you miserable.
  4. Throw away the bathroom scales, the tape measure, the calorie counter, the food scales, the diet books, the gurus and the gadgets.
  5. And get real with yourself. Get very honest with yourself. Make sure you understand why you’re doing this and how much it means to you. It has to be important to you. If it’s not, you won’t stick to it.

Of all the steps listed above, if you can just find an empowering, unwavering, invincible motivation to lose weight, you will conquer everything that stands between you and your goal. I promise you. But you have to find it first. Dig deep.

I just don’t get this … I really don’t.

There’s a restaurant in Vegas called the Heart Attack Grill where a single meal can exceed 8,000 calories, and customers weighing in at over 350 pounds (159kg) eat for free. They have “Bypass Burgers” and “Flatliner Fries”. Is this supposed to be funny?

A guy eating a “Triple Bypass Burger” apparently suffered a heart attack. Read the story here.

How did we ever become so casual about our health? There is a huge mind body disconnect going on around us and it’s so sad.

Our food is so toxic and so addictive that for some of us, breaking that addiction is all too hard.

We all have to dig deep to find our motivation to lose weight. For some of us, it may not be that we do it for ourselves, for some of us it may be that we do it for others. They say that a person will do more for someone they love than they will ever do for themselves.

My Motivation To Lose Weight | Kim Kardashian Cellulite Before And After Airbrushing | Day 31 of P90X 90 Day Challenge

kim kardashian celluliteI can’t believe I’m writing about Kim Kardashian and her cellulite. 

But I feel I must because it’s cr@p like this that makes the rest of us run ourselves to death on the ‘dreadmill’ trying in vain to attain the bodies of the women we admire most, when they don’t even have the results we covet.

The only difference is, they have great airbrushers to remove their cellulite, and we don’t!

These photos were taken for an issue of Complex magazine and the website mistakenly posted the “pre-airbrushed” photos instead of the touched up ones. When asked about it Kim said, “So what – I have a little cellulite.” Paris Hilton went so far as to say her cellulite looks like “cottage cheese stuffed in a garbage bag.”

But here’s the thing. So many of us idolize the bodies of the rich and famous, when in fact many of these bodies aren’t real in the first place. So if the rich and famous can only get there by way of Picasso’s Airbrush, why are we killing ourselves to reach an ideal that’s not real?

Wouldn’t it simply be healthier to reach our own ideal?

When the gorgeous Jessica Alba has to be airbrushed to perfection, what hope is there for the rest of us if we try and uphold these unrealistic ideals?

So, this is just another example of how we are set up to fail in our quest to get in the best shape of our lives. Some of us will never be a Jessica Alba, or a Jennifer Lopez, or even a Lara Croft for that matter.

But what’s important is that we set realistic goals and simply be the best that we can be.

kim kardashian celluliteKudos to Kate Winslet who in 2003 was livid when she was excessively and unrealistically airbrushed by British GQ. She stated publicly, “I do not look like that, and more importantly, I don’t desire to look like that.”

But it doesn’t stop there … Kitty Couric, Andy Roddick, Faith Hill, Madonna and more have all been massively airbrushed to show a more perfect image. To see more retouching scandals click here.

And who can forget the hoo-haa surrounding the scandalous L’Oreal airbrushing of Julia Roberts and Christie Turlington. Their images were so digitally altered that the advertisements were banned in the UK.

But I’m not done yet. The weight loss industry is the biggest con job of all. How many times have you seen a commercial for the latest diet pill or workout gadget that is guaranteed to get you from the weight you are to a supermodel in just a few weeks?

Yes, I want to believe the results too … but watch this video and see if it doesn’t irk you just a bit.

Mad? Mad enough to believe that you’ve been lied to by an industry that is supposed to be helping you?

I’m not saying they’re all bad. Hey, I’m doing P90X so I can’t possibly say that. But on the whole, the cards are stacked against you.

My one driving passion that keeps me going is that I want to prove that you can get in the best shape of your life by simply eating healthy foods and finding an exercise that you love and look forward to doing.

Yes, other factors do count, but the basics are pretty simple. Eat from a selection of healthy foods designed to fuel your body, and burn calories doing something that you love doing. It’s that simple. Truly. There’s no complicated science to it! The weight loss industry would have you believe it’s complicated – but it’s not.
