Sundays are so special to me as they give me an opportunity to slow down and reflect on my motivation to lose weight, how I’m progressing, my successes and my challenges.
I started this journey 5 weeks ago, not really knowing how it would turn out, but hoping against all hope this time my motivation to lose weight would prevail and things would be different. You see, I’ve tried every diet ever invented. If you missed my list of failed diets check them out here. And this isn’t even a complete list. I have believed every lie ever sold to me by the diet industry. And I am FED UP WITH ALL OF IT!
So 5 weeks ago I committed to trying one last and final time, to shed 50lbs and get into the best shape of my life. I found my motivation to lose weight and I decided to do something I’ve never done before when it comes to weight loss. I threw away the bathroom scales, I have no clue what my measurements are, I’m not counting calories (as a serial dieter I do have a rough idea how many calories I am consuming however) and I’m not measuring calories burned during exercise.
So what AM I doing?
I’m going back to a time when things weren’t so darned complicated.
I’m going back to a time when if you ate sensibly and worked out a little bit you were pretty much able to stay in shape.
I’m going back to a time when, if your jeans got a bit tight you simply looked yourself in the mirror and said, “You know what … it’s time to cut back!”
I’m going back to a time when you didn’t need a pharmaceutical degree to understand the ingredients in a bottle of sauce.
Basically, I’m going back to a time when they didn’t have junk food, and the foods we ate didn’t need chemicals to make them taste good.
Do you know that chemicals make you fat? Your body wasn’t designed to ingest chemicals and doesn’t know what to do with them. So more often than not it just stores these toxins as fat.
So the easiest way to avoid this, is simply not to eat them.
So this time around, I’m going as natural as I possibly can. I have a mantra, ‘If God didn’t make it – don’t eat it.” In other words, God didn’t make Diet Coke, Diet Shakes, Diet Cookies, Diet Pills, Diet anything. God made glorious fruits, nuts, vegetables, grains, legumes and yes he made cows, sheep, fish and chicken as well.
My basic philosophy is that cavemen didn’t diet. They didn’t need to because they didn’t have McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts on every street corner!
We need to diet because we’ve been corrupted by drool inducing advertisements tempting us with their chemically laden, high-sugar, high-fat content, highly addictive toxic foods.
If we could only wean ourselves off of these chemical time bombs for just one month we would notice a huge improvement in our health and our well-being. We’d start to feel energized and alive again. And our dormant taste buds would come back to life and rejoice in our new-found food choices.
So this Sunday I reflect on the past 5 weeks.
- I have stuck 99.9% to my commitment to eat only naturally occurring foods (I cheated with half a sausage one day – Yuck!) And no, I’m not organic … way too complicated for my liking … but I’m only putting foods into my body that are naturally occurring in nature.
- I have stuck 100% to my commitment to not drink any alcohol for 90 days. This was a really hard one for me. I love my wine! I love my Dirty Vodka Martini’s. I love my Gin and Tonics. I love my Margaritas. But for 90 days I have committed to not touching a drop.
- I have stuck 100% to my commitment to exercising 6 days per week and I chose P90X as my choice of exercise because I needed a challenge and I love a challenge. Tony has two great expression … “Just keep hitting play” and “Do your best, and forget the rest.” He keeps me motivated and I enjoy my workouts with him. P90X is not for everyone, and I’m not a Beach Body coach nor will I ever be one. I just really like the program.
What I’ve found after 5 weeks of sticking to my commitments is that without all the pressure of the bathroom scales, the tape measure and the calorie counting, and all the traditional ways of dieting, I’m losing inches!
I see it in the way my clothes fit me. I am getting toned, and stronger and my core is ridiculous. You know those rock hard Gwen Stefani abs I keep talking about? They’re in there … just hidden under a layer of blubber right now. But that’s all good. I see progress.
The purpose of this blog post is to document my journey, and to prove that with the right mindset and an unbreakable motivation to lose weight, that we CAN lose weight AND keep it off forever by NEVER DIETING AGAIN, and by simply doing an exercise that we look forward to and enjoy. I believe that it really is that simple.
Yes, I understand that there are some hurdles and obstacles and that I’m over simplifying it just a bit. But what I want to prove in this 90 day journey is that the diet industry doesn’t have any of the right answers for you. I want to prove once and for all that diets DON’T work and that a simple common sense approach to eating and exercise will get you the results you so desperately desire and deserve. There is no quick fix. I’ve been looking for a quick fix for 33 years! It doesn’t exist!
